FACE OF AFRICA GRAND FINALE HELD IN LAGOS The night was the 6th all roads led to the Eko Hotels and Towers for the grand finale of the Mnet face of Africa. It was a night of glamour and razzmatazz
After a night of what can only be described as high fashion with most of Nigeria’s and Africa’s fashion elite in attendance, the coveted crown went to Lukando Nalungwe from Zambia.
It truly was a night of high gilts and glamour at the Eko Hotel Exhibition Centre in Lagos, with show stopping outfits from 10 of Nigeria’s most illustrious designers.
The list included many BN favs such as Zizi Cardow, Frank Osodi, Odio Mimonet, Fati Asibelua, Folake Folarin-Coker, Ituen Basi, Adebayo Jones, Lanre Da Silva-Ajayi, Lisa Folawiyo and Yemi Osunkoya (whose dress was won by Face of Africa winner Lukando).
The night also showcased two of the brightest fashion talents from East and Southern Africa – Kenya’s John Kaveke and South African star David Tlale and included 2010 cruise collections from runway designers Emmanuel Ungaro, Versace and Christian Lacroix.
Apart from the breathtaking pieces, the night also featured entertaining performances from South African songstress Lira and Nigerian Fave Dbanj (accompanied by Dr Sid and Wande Coal).
However Nigerians present and those who watched the event live on Cable Televeision were slightly disappointed by the fact that a Nigerian did not win the title “ Face Of Africa 2010.
However we should not forget the fact that a Nigerian in the name of Oluchi was crowned the first ever Face of Africa a couple of years ago. So we can’t win them all
One of the top five last five contestants still standing at the just concluded FACE OF Africa 2010 was a Nigerian, However, she lost out to Zambia's Lukando Nalungwe who won this year's M-net Face of Africa competition taking home 50,000 U.S. dollars and an international modelling contract.
Zambia's Lukando Nalungwe on Saturday (February 6) emerged the winner of this year's Face of Africa competition held in Nigeria's commercial port city of Lagos.
The event was hosted in Lagos by an African television entertainment company M-net, and was attended by Nigerian politicians and a number of African celebrities.
"I don't believe this is a beauty pageant, I guess this is a competition, so it is very different from a beauty pageant, there was no controversy, there was no conflict," said Biola Adekanbi, Director M-net Africa.
The Face of Africa competition has in the past jump started the careers of many young African ladies in the world of fashion and modelling.
The final 10 contestants were unveiled at the final event on Saturday evening where Nalungwe emerged victorious.
Nalungwe said her success only came after her continued persistence to be a part of the competition.
"I started trying when I was 17 years old, Face of Africa crew came to my country, I tried it, I couldn't make it, the following year again I tried, unfortunately I wasn't lucky again. Then after two years, they came back to my country, I was 19, I tried again, I couldn’t make it but, never gave up. I always told myself to go for it...and finally they came to my country last year and then unfortunately just the previous night before I was picked to represent my country my little brother past away," said Nalungwe.
Nalungwe, 22, is currently studying business administration in Kabwe, Zambia.
Aside from winning 50,000 U.S. dollars and an international modelling contract, Nalungwe will also take home wrist watches, a laptop and more money for shopping.
