A FUTURE WITHOUT TRAFFIC. A “Straddling” bus that is cheaper, greener and is faster alternative to commute.
No am not joking, am serious.
This bus actually rides over traffick. Look at the photograph. It is being built in China and it hit the headlines several weeks ago.
It is a scheme from Shenzhen Hashi Future Parking Equipment Co.
The Straddling Bus looks kind of like an above-ground subway — except for the part where regular cars go under the subway cars. It is sort of like a man on stilts walking’/straddling over you. Our you walking under him (between his legs (stilts).
The system, unveiled at the Beijing International High-tech Expo in May, consists of a 4 to 4.5 meter-high subway car with passenger boarding on the upper level and a hollow shell on the lower level for vehicles to pass through.
Shenzhen Hashi brought some impressive statistics for the system: capacity for 1200 to 1400 passengers, reduction in traffic jams by 20% to 30%, and cheap building costs (10% of the cost of a traditional subway). But we have to wonder about the safety of this thing.
You’d probably think that driving under a bus is weird, but once upon a time people thought driving under an over-head bridge was weird.
Beijing’s Mentougou District is already planning a pilot project for the system.
The challenge of speeding up the traffick on urban road has been top of the list for urban transportation planners and putting more buses on the road road will jam up the roads and make things worse.
Building subways and over head bridges are expensive and slow. So its no wonder the ‘wonder’ bus is being embraced in China.
The straddling bus, first exhibited on the 13th Beijing International High-tech Expo in May this year. In the near future, the model is to be put into pilot use in Beijing’s Mentougou District (bjnews).
It is officially called the 3D fast bus or straddling bus.
Proposed by Shenzhen Hashi Future Parking Equipment Co. Ltd, the bus model looks like a subway or light-rail train bestriding the road.
It is 4-4.5 m high with two levels: passengers board on the upper level while other vehicles lower than 2 m can go through under. Powered by electricity and solar energy, the bus can speed up to 60 km/h carrying 1200-1400 passengers at a time without blocking other vehicles’ way. Also, it costs about 500 million yuan to build the bus and a 40-km-long path for it, only 10% of building equivalent subway. It is said that the bus can reduce traffic jams by 20-30%.
Song Youzhou, chairman of Shenzhen Hashi Future Parking Equipment Co. Ltd in his presentation said:
China may have found an environmentally friendly way to save money while easing congestion on city roads, Engadget reports.
Instead of spending millions to widen roads, the Shenzhen Huashi Future Parking Equipment company is developing a "3D Express Coach" (also called a "three-dimensional fast bus") that will allow cars less than 2 meters high to travel underneath the upper level carrying passengers.
According to Engadget, construction of the first 115 miles of track will begin in Beijing's Mentougou district at the end of 2010.
