I’M NOT GAY SAYS ASA One Nigerian artiste that has in no doubt made the country and the African continent at large proud is Asa. With her unique blend of soul, reggae, highlife, folklore and RnB, she has been able to cut a niche for herself as a star and force to reckon with in the world’s music scene.
Asa stormed the world with her debut album in 2007 which was a massive hit, something quite different from the normal Nigerian artiste style of commercial music, but as it always said good thing sells no matter the cost, Asa broke through the hearts and minds of millions of people with her revolutionary message and beautiful blend of different genres of music which brought everyone asking the question who is this?
However, one thing surprising about this young star is that unlike other celebrities who are always seen partying, clubbing, or attending both local & International events, Asa has a different lifestyle all together as she is hardly seen at such places or functions.
She’s not married, neither is she in any relationship. Unfortuntely for our beautiful singer who says she is naturally a shy person, some people think she is gay. Speaking on Beat FM’s Drive Time Show, Asa says I don’t know probably because I’ m not out all the time. What People don’t understand is that people can actually be serious with their job. I’m not gay we have to set it straight. I don’t have to go out to clubs. No. I have my principles. I don’t celebrate my birthday. Then I feel I should be quiet and talk to God. And that’s me.
Well then, how does our revolutionary singer unwind? She says I like to have my friends come over and cook. Because I grew up in a house full of boys so they make me cook. Perhaps growing up in a house full of boys really has a lot to do with her tomboy style. Well that would be a story for another day.
Back to my story, for you all out there who thinks Asa is gay, you’ve heard it all from the horse’s mouth, I am not gay says Asa. She further gives a hint of her ideal man, He should be tall, slim, built not necessarily pretty. I do hope she finds him soon or better put, he finds her soon.
Fondly called Bukola by her friends, she recently did a collaboration with 9ice on his latest Album -Tradition, which surprised a lot of people because of the depth of her spoken Yoruba language. Asa reacts to it like this 9ice made me speak Yoruba. When he did that I thought that if he could do that then I can do it. And the song was better than the way I expected it. It’s about painting a picture of a good Nigeria and holding the country highly.
Talking about where what she draws inspiration from she says Lagos. Too many things to talk about. I like coming home. I’m not proud like people think; I am inspired at home
She further advises upcoming artistes like this They have to do things they are comfortable with. If I do things that I ‘m comfortable with and am fine with it then you should do what is comfortable for you. Don’t think about the money. I do things to express myself not for the money. Nigerians love good music. Be something. Invent something.
