EAGLES ARRIVE LUANDA..PLAY FIRST MATCH ON TUESDAY The Super Eagles of Nigeria, Friday at 5.15 pm, touched down at the Luanda international airport, aboard a chartered air craft from Durban South Africa where they had gone to prepare for the competition, hopeful of a good outing in the Orange CAF Africa Nations Cup.
Led by coach Amodu Shaibu, most of the staff at the airport stopped work briefly to herald the star studded Nigerian team, with Portsmouth of England striker Nwankwo Kanu receiving the greatest attention.
Other players who were the cynosure of excited airport staff included John Mikel Obi of Chelsea, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Joseph Yobo of Everton, Osaze Odenwigie and Taiye Taiwo of Olympic Marseille.
Coach Shuaibu told the press at the airport that he was happy with the quality of work that was done in Durban and he believed Nigeria will give a good account of herself as always.
The team then connected another flight to their group b base in benguela where they will play their opening match on January 12 against defending champions the pharaohs of Egypt. Other teams in the group are Mozambique and Benin.
Meanwhile The Confederation of African Football condemned the attack against the Togolese delegation convoy heading to Cabinda from Congo.
Immediately after the news, CAF held an emergency meeting on that issue.
According to information sent to CAF again late in the afternoon, another meeting was held. The Angolan Football Association president who is also the director general of the Local Organising Committee, Mr. Justino Fernandes, informed the CAF Executive Committee that the incident happened 10 kilometres within the Angolan territory.
The Angolan authority deployed immediately a team down there to assess the exact situation.
According to the information provided by the director general, all injured people were taken to a hospital in Cabinda.
On Saturday morning, 9 January 2010, an important delegation be headed by the Angolan Minister on Internal Affairs, Ministers of Youth and Sports, members from the Prime Minister’s office as well as a powerful delegation from CAF will be in Cabinda.
The Angolan Prime Minister will meet on Saturday CAF President, Mr Issa Hayatou, to take decisions to guarantee the smooth running of the competition.
The Confederation of African Football is terribly saddened by this events and express its total support as well as sympathy to the entire Togolese delegation.
